‘You have to keep it going’: Relational values and social sustainability in upland agriculture

A transition to a more sustainable food production system in Europe has significant implications for the social constitution of rural spaces. Moreover, research highlighted that engagement with sustainability initiatives can be affected by people's desire maintain aspects their current realities pertaining occupations, traditions and lifestyles. Farmers are central agricultural transition, yet also socially embedded spaces targeted transformation. This article engages this dilemma through an exploration farmer values upland farming area Ireland. Specifically, we draw on qualitative case-study data explore how farmers value occupation, lifestyles structures terms relationships which they operate. We highlight range dimensions farming—especially as autonomous, outdoor work—in tacit skills knowledge, familial legacies certain forms organisation. Conceptually, builds calls from within scholarship engage development. develop deploy relational analytic framework, offers simple effective lens exploring generated articulated.
